The staging process is used to determine whether cancer has spread over its primary source/body such as the pleura (the lining of the lung) or the peritoneum (abdomen)

The information obtained from the staging procedure determine the stage of cancer and the stage of cancer determines the prognosis and treatment of cancer.

Tests used to investigate cancer

Chest X-ray

There is a radiograph of the lung tissue and bone surrounding the lung tissue. An energy beam through the body to form a film and makes a picture of areas in the body.

CT Scan (CAT Scan)

This is a detailed series of images of the thorax and abdomen from different angles. These images are generated by a computer connected to an x-ray machine a dye can be injected into a vein or swallowed the organs or tissues to help appear clearer. This method is also called computed tomography or computerized axial tomography.

MRI {Magnetic Resonance Imaging}

This method uses a magnet to create radii waves and a computer with a set of detailed images of the chest and abdomen. This method is also called nuclear magnetic resonance (NMRI)

The malignant mesothelioma staging is divided into two main groups:

1. Localized Malignant Mesothelioma (Stage 1)

In stage 1 of cancer, can also be found in the lungs is found in the lining of the breast, the membrane or heart lining (pericardium) on the same side of the trunk.

2-Advanced malignant mesothelioma (Stage 2, Stage 3, Stage 4)

stage 2

The cancer is found in the pleura (the lining of the lungs) and in the lymph nodes on the same side of the breast. Cancer can also be found in the lungs, diaphragm, and heart bags (the lining of the heart) on the same side of the breast.

stage 3

Cancer has spread to one of the following areas:

a-chest wall

b-mediastinum{the tissue that divides the chest into two}

c-the heart

d-beyond the diaphragm

e-the lining of the peritoneum

The cancer can also spread to the lymph nodes in the chest or outside the chest.

Stage 4

The cancer has moved into distant organs and tissues

Knowledge of these stages can aid one in understanding the possible outcome and available treatment modalities.
