Have you ever asked your child a question, with a fairly precise idea of the answer you would get, and then completely taken by surprise? How about a passionate request for hummus, carrots and crackers for lunch ?!

Apparently, this toasted red pepper hummus recipe is just as good! My children, of course, agree. Maybe yours will too!

What’s in Roasted Bell Pepper Hummus?

Hummus is pretty mainstream food these days. In fact, most of you have probably eaten it by now, but have you ever thought about making it?

Hummus is a pureed food made from chickpeas (also called chickpeas), tahini (a paste made from sesame seeds) and lemon juice, garlic, salt, and olive oil.

Since I prefer to avoid the lectins in legumes that aren’t properly soaked, fermented, sprouted, or cooked, I’m a little picky about my chickpeas. Sometimes I buy them dry and soak them overnight and then cook them under pressure. Other times I buy them already cooked and preserved from a source that already did these steps for me.

Basic, Plain, Hummus contains no more than the ingredients listed above. However, hummus can be individualized in very different ways. My family likes roasted red peppers mashed with the chickpeas, but here are a few more ideas:

  • Spicy Mexican hummus with taco seasoning, jalapeño and coriander
  • Mediterranean hummus with roasted garlic, sun-dried tomatoes and pine nuts
  • Chocolate hummus with cocoa powder and maple syrup

Why make hummus from scratch?

“Why bother?” You can ask. Well, for several reasons:

  1. Because like most homemade things! It just tastes better. I remember eating homemade caramel corn as a kid and then being appalled by the stuff that was sold in a bag in the supermarket. And homemade ice cream throws what you’ve bought out of the park.
  2. If I do it myself, I can control the quality of the ingredients. Example: fish quality in homemade fish fingers vs. bought in the store.
  3. It is also difficult to find grain-free fish fingers. Or the soaked, pressure cooked chickpeas I used for this recipe. Sometimes it’s easier to do it yourself.
  4. It’s cheaper too! How much does a salted caramel latte cost in a coffee shop? Much more than it takes to do it at home.

Preparation and consumption of roasted paprika hummus

Once you have all of your ingredients, making hummus is pretty straightforward. First you need chickpeas (also known as chickpeas). Whether you use dry or canned beans is up to you. If you’re using dry, you’ll need to soak them overnight, rinse, boil (preferably in a pressure cooker), and let them cool. Of course, if you want to make hummus from dry chickpeas, you need to plan ahead. If you are using cans, just break the can open and rinse well.

Next you need tahini. Finding good tahini is easy so I usually just do it buy itbut i heard it’s pretty easy do it.

Grab a high speed mixer or food processor, some lemons, salt, garlic, and olive oil and you are done. Put all the ingredients in the blender in the right order, puree until smooth and the hummus is ready.

Eat now!

Serve hummus

My kids mostly only use hummus as a vegetarian dip. I just cut a plate of vegetables into sticks or slices and let them sink in. We are also happy to use grain-free crackers. I’ve also added it to wraps or diluted it with water to drizzle on lettuce.

Pretty easy right? Try it out and let me know what you think!
