ACross the US children go back to school despite increased COVID-19 cases. Parents are concerned about the emergence of the more contagious Delta variant as the most prominent strain of the virus in the country. Not only are they concerned about the health and safety of their children, they have also faced a childcare crisis for the past year and a half, and now it seems unlikely that it will end anytime soon.
This will be the third school year hit by the pandemic, but while children under the age of 12 are not yet eligible for a vaccination, many schools are not making containment efforts and several governors have banned masking requirements. It is our responsibility as adults to protect our children, but record numbers of hospitalizations for children suggest that we are already failing at this task.
