8 factors that influence health when you are older
  • Our Relationships – It is observed that older people who maintain a healthy social life either with their family, friends or colleagues tend to have fewer health problems in the future. People who do not socialize or live alone tend to develop health problems at a much faster rate. The main reason for socializing is because it keeps you busy and busy and if you are developing some symptoms, the other person notices it faster than you, making it easier to diagnose early. It is also helpful as older people often forget to take their medicine while the other person can help remember it.
  • Injuries – Injuries play a vital role in deteriorating a person’s health. In old age, injuries take time to heal, which can cause many other complications for a person compared to a young person. Many of the complications that develop in older people are due to falls. The WHO says that about 35-55% of older people fall and then experience some life-long complications.
  • Education – Education plays a key role in the health of an individual. It has been observed that the more educated a person is, the easier it is to detect a disease early on.
  • Finance – Finances play an important role in the health of an individual, especially in the elderly. With this constantly evolving world, drugs have become much more expensive and it is difficult to keep up with these prices. Most older people depend on their life savings or pensions, which would sometimes be difficult to reach. Hence, one must be financially independent even in old age as this plays a vital role in influencing one’s health.
  • Keeping up with changes – Older people have a hard time coping with this changing world, be it in technology or in people’s mindsets. Many times older people who are not able to understand certain things lose their self-esteem and cause them to fall into depression. Therefore, when teaching something to an older person, you should take special care when teaching a young child.
  • Abuse – Most of the elderly are physically, mentally abused or sometimes neglected. This puts great pressure on their health and they are prone to depression. The WHO estimates that more than 4 million older people are mistreated each year around the world by their loved ones. This leads to many health-defying challenges.
  • Improvement of the friendly situation with the elderly – People need to be more patient and understanding when working with older people as they can be slow to pick things up. One should not compare an older person to oneself while doing something, as they will both have a different rhythm for different things.
  • Looking for a healthy lifestyle – Food plays the most important role in aging a person. You should not eat more or less, since both cases can cause complications. A person must have a balanced diet that contains all the necessary nutrients and vitamins for the human body to function efficiently. Also, having a healthy diet keeps your mind happy and fresh. One should refrain from eating junk food in old age as they are difficult to digest.
  • Routine check up – A check-up will help identify if there are any underlying diseases that need to be treated. It is difficult to observe certain symptoms in older people compared to young people. So it is highly recommended that older people undergo routine checkups to avoid major complications.
  • Exercise – You have to do some light exercise to move your muscles. Stiff muscles would also cause various problems like joint pains and arthritis in older people. However, one should not try too hard with exercise. Trying yoga is highly recommended as it does not involve heavy lifting. Walking is also said to be the most effective against old age.
