5 natural detox bath recipes for relaxation and stress relief

Nothing is more relaxing than a warm bath … except maybe a relaxing warm detox bath, which also helps cleanse the body in other ways.
If you are dealing with toxins or skin problems, these natural recipes are a simple, easy, and inexpensive way to promote good health. I’m always up for a warm bath, and these natural supplements help improve health while you relax.
A good detox bath will also make you tired, so I recommend doing it as part of your bedtime.
Natural detox bath recipes
You may have heard of a bitter bath (and that’s our basic recipe here), but how about a clay bath, vinegar bath, or even a mustard bath ?!
These are all natural ingredients found in most of our kitchens or pantries that can stimulate circulation and smell, stimulate relaxation, and build magnesium stores.
All you need are a few simple ingredients to prepare some or all of these detox bath recipes:
- Epsom salt
- Apple Cider Vinegar
- Baking soda
- Bentonite clay (another special ingredient that has many other uses, so consider stocking up!)
- Mustard powder or ginger powder
- essential oils (mix with powder or salt instead of directly in the bath)
These recipes are safe and comforting for kids too! (But choose your essential oils wisely.)
Basic recipe for a detox bath with Epsom salts
Here is my basic detox bath recipe. Find the other variations below. Mix and match or find your favorite!
Recipe for a salt detox bath
This simple salt bath recipe is great for relieving skin irritation, increasing magnesium levels and general detoxification.
Bring 2 cups of water to a boil in a small pan.
Pour the water into a quart-sized mason jar.
Stir in the sea salt, Epsom salt, and baking soda.
Fill the bathtub with warm / hot water.
Add the apple cider vinegar.
Pour in the salt mixture and add essential oils if you use it.
Soak in the bath for 30 minutes or as long as desired.
Any detox bath can leave you feeling tired or light-headed when you step out. I don’t recommend doing this when you are home alone or before going anywhere in case you are tired or need help.
Clay detox bath recipe
Instructions for a clay detox bath
Dissolve the Epsom salt in a warm / hot bath and add essential oils as desired. There are two options for the sound:
- Mix the clay vigorously in a small amount of water until the lumps are mostly dissolved. Do not use metal for this! I mix with a plastic spoon in a glass jar. Pour the clay mixture into the bath and soak for at least 20 minutes.
- Mix this clay with a small amount of water to make a paste. Stand in the tub filled with water and rub the clay mixture all over your body to create a skin mask and let it dry for 5 minutes before sitting down. This provides direct contact with the skin and effectively pulls toxins out of the skin. Soak in the bath for at least 20 minutes or as long as desired. While soaking, use a washcloth to scrub any remaining clay off the skin.
This bath is great for removing many toxins as the clay binds heavy metals and the Epsom salts help draw a wide variety of toxins out of the body while also replenishing magnesium levels.
Oxygen detox bath recipe
This bath is particularly helpful in the case of illness, as the ginger helps to clear congestion or relieve pain in the limbs. It can also help with allergies or skin irritation.
Instructions for an oxygen detox bath
- Fill the tub with warm / hot water and add the hydrogen peroxide and dried ginger.
- Soak in the tub for 30 minutes or as long as you want.
Vinegar detox bath recipe
This is an excellent bath for soothing skin problems as vinegar balances the pH of the skin. I don’t like the smell of vinegar, but if someone in the family has sunburn, eczema, dandruff, or dry itchy skin, we take a vinegar bath.
Apple cider vinegar has a number of benefits, and I find that not only does it help my skin, but it also leaves me with soft skin and shiny hair.
Instructions for the vinegar bath
- Once or twice a week I fill a tub with warm to hot water and add 1-2 cups. added Apple Cider Vinegar.
- I soak for 20-30 minutes, use a washcloth to clean my face, and make sure my hair gets wet too.
After bathing, I rinse it off under a cool shower, although some sources recommend letting the vinegar water dry on the skin.
Mustard detox bath recipe
I know I’ve lost my mind, right? If it helps, I mean organic mustard powder, not the yellow stuff in a bottle! In ancient cultures, this spice was often used in preparations to relieve colds, flu, and sore muscles due to its blood circulation-enhancing properties.
Magnesium and essential oils make this bath detoxifying and aromatic.

Additional information on the detox bath
- The warmer the water, the stronger the detox effect.
- If your water contains chlorine and fluoride, I recommend adding a few tablespoons of bentonite clay to each of these baths to help absorb the chemicals so they don’t get absorbed into your skin. Here are some other ways to reduce chemicals in bath water.
- Any of these natural ingredients can be used alone or in combination for a cleansing effect.
- All recipes can be doubled or tripled, but this will increase the detox effect.
