Lifestyle Changes to Overcome Obesity

Obesity has reached epic proportions worldwide. It’s a condition where your calorie intake is much higher than the number of calories you burn and is commonly caused by factors such as a sedentary lifestyle, poor eating habits, and lack of sleep, among others. By making simple lifestyle changes, you can beat obesity. Here are some steps you could take:

  • You should set goals that are achievable and realistic. You could certainly lose a pound or two a week.

  • Stick to a healthy eating pattern. Make sure you include all food groups in your meal, from vegetables, fruits, and whole grains to proteins and healthy fats.

  • Never skip breakfast — if you eat well in the morning, you won’t overeat or gorge on junk food later in the day.

  • Avoid sweetened drinks, cola, caffeine and sweets. Drink sugar-free tea and stay well hydrated.

  • Never skip a meal or starve. Your metabolism will slow down and you will inevitably store more fat. Eat small meals that are healthy.

  • Get adequate exercise; At least 30 minutes of brisk walking or running should put you back a few calories.

  • Another important aspect of overcoming obesity is getting enough sleep. Poor sleep is often associated with weight gain.

  • Avoid stress, because stress, anxiety, and fear could cause you to overeat.

  • Don’t go on weird crash diets because they’re unsustainable and you’ll put on all that weight in no time. Find ways to prepare meals healthier and choose less fatty and more vegetarian meals when eating out.

  • When you feel like a snack, grab a carrot or some nuts rather than a donut or a fry samosa!

  • Portion control is an important aspect of healthy eating. Identify a serving size that’s right for you that satisfies your hunger, but don’t go for a second serving.

  • Always set goals and find someone to work with you on your weight loss program so you can feel accountable. You will also feel more motivated and celebrate your achievements.

  • Cook at home more often, although it’s tempting to dial a number and order pizza. Make cooking a fun activity with a partner, friend or family member. So you not only have quality time together, but also manage to eat healthy.

  • Take up meditation, yoga, dance or some fun methods to burn fat and stay stress free!

  • Never take over-the-counter supplements or herbal preparations that advertise easy weight loss.

  • Walk wherever you can. Better to take the stairs than the elevator. Take up gardening or take your pet for a walk – you’re bound to lose a few pounds.
