I have just returned from a visit to the vet to take my three dogs for their scheduled booster shots and tests. I saw a sign at the vet for a senior wellness insurance plan that covered an exam along with the necessary tests and some preventative measures. I didn’t think I needed this insurance but it got me thinking about how I could possibly have saved money on my vet bills. It wasn’t an affordability issue, but with all the talk about health insurance, it got me thinking about caring for my pets as they get older and potentially face potential future health issues.
Taking care of your pet’s health is a responsibility, just like taking care of your own health. Just like you, you can get health insurance for your pet. There are so many good pet health companies to choose from. You may want to consider a company that offers a wellness insurance plan that will cover some of the costs associated with keeping your pet healthy through regular wellness checks. These plans can be a good choice if you visit your vet regularly and your pet is on a maintenance schedule.
Then there is the unforeseen situation where your pet has had an accident or a serious health issue which results in you being faced with a huge vet bill. Of course, you can pay these vet bills with your credit card or even take out a loan. In this case, accident health insurance would be the most advantageous. You can think of pet insurance like car insurance – it’s there when you need it, but it probably won’t cover all the costs should something happen to your pet.
It is best to talk to your veterinarian about the types of pet health insurance that are available and that your vet would recommend. You should also research these companies to see what they offer and how they differ. It is difficult to make a decision on whether or not to have procedures done on your pet when the cost is at stake. Sometimes your vet will cut costs in the event of a serious illness, but that shouldn’t be expected. Pet health insurance is there when you need it and could potentially save your pet’s life.
