What Are the Symptoms of Acid Reflux?

0 11

The most common symptom of acid reflux is heartburn. Heartburn doesn’t mean you have reflux, it can be caused by other conditions including a severe candida yeast infection or overgrowth. Candida infection can lead to a variety of problems, including thrush, depression, skin irritation, heartburn, and hemorrhoids.

It’s possible to have acid reflux without suffering from heartburn, there are a number of other atypical symptoms that can occur.

Acid reflux generally occurs after eating, it can take an hour or two for symptoms to appear depending on what you’ve eaten, how much you’ve eaten, and what you do after eating. Lying down, bending over, or exercising makes acid reflux symptoms worse.

If you experience acid reflux more than twice a week, you may have GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) and should seek medical advice. GERD is caused by damage to the esophagus when stomach contents come into contact with it for a long time.

heartburn

Heartburn is characterized by a burning or restless feeling behind the breastbone, which can also spread to the throat and neck. The burning sensation occurs when stomach contents travel up the esophagus (tube between the throat and stomach) and into the throat.

About 75% of people with acid reflux experience heartburn at night.

Heartburn has nothing to do with the heart.

difficulties swallowing

A burning sensation or pain in the throat may be felt when swallowing, the pain may become severe when swallowing food. This may also be accompanied by a feeling of a lump of food getting stuck in the throat or chest. This is caused by damage to the membrane lining the throat and esophagus, which is damaged by overexposure to stomach acid.

Upset stomach or indigestion

About 50% of acid reflux patients experience an upset stomach, which can be characterized by pain and discomfort in the upper abdomen, nausea after eating, excessive belching, and a feeling of having a full stomach much sooner than expected.

burping

This is where the contents of the stomach (food, stomach acid and enzymes) flow back up into the pharynx (back of the mouth) and sometimes even into the mouth. This is often accompanied by a bitter or sour taste in the mouth.

Asthmatic Symptoms

This is characterized by wheezing, coughing and sneezing. Natural breathing is difficult. When you burp, acid or acid fumes can enter your lungs, causing asthma symptoms, especially in people who have asthma.

hoarseness or vocal harshness

Because of the pressure on the vocal cords, your voice can sound harsh and you may have trouble speaking and find yourself needing to clear your throat frequently. The throat wall can also harden if it has been regularly exposed to stomach acid.

Yellow liquid or stains on your pillow

If you have reflux during the night you may wake up to find yellow liquid or spots on your pillow, the liquid is usually stomach acid.

Many of these symptoms are just normal ailments that most of us experience at some point. Acid reflux becomes obvious when there are enough symptoms for your doctor to diagnose it. Your doctor may order tests to confirm the diagnosis.

There are natural cures for acid reflux, simple changes in your diet are often enough to completely stop all acid reflux symptoms.

Please carefully review the short- and long-term side effects of taking antacids and other acid reflux medications, many of which may actually make your condition worse. The FDA has issued a safety warning regarding the long-term use of proton pump inhibitors. Prolonged use can lead to osteoporosis and an increased risk of fractures.
