With the ongoing changes that the world is going through, more and more children from all over the world are suffering from obesity. This is caused by the lifestyle change that progress requires. It has never been more important for parents and guardians to ensure their children lead a healthy lifestyle. Obesity, if left untreated, can cause serious health problems in childhood and later in life. Children benefit physically, mentally, socially and academically from a healthy lifestyle with proper nutrition and exercise.

But what exactly are the benefits of a healthy lifestyle for children? What does a healthy lifestyle bring? There are actually many benefits that come with being healthy, but I will mention five (5).

1. A child who eats right and exercises regularly will have a physically fit body, which can reduce the risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and more. These conditions are usually associated with obesity.

2. Apart from physical health, a healthy lifestyle also ensures mental health. The right diet and exercise help children to cope well with mental challenges. A healthy lifestyle ensures better sleep and more energy at night, making children feel better mentally. It can also relieve depression.

3. Healthy children also benefit socially. A physically active and healthy child usually has high self-esteem and will help them make friends easily. Children who participate in sports or other physical activities are more likely to make friends than those who stay in front of the TV and computer.

4. Healthy children are also more likely to benefit emotionally. They have high self-esteem because they feel better physically. They also become more confident in dealing with other children.

5. Finally, children with a healthy lifestyle benefit academically. Children who eat right, exercise regularly, and get enough sleep have the physical and mental energy to face daily school challenges. They are also able to retain their classes better than children who have unhealthy lifestyles.

These are just some of the benefits children experience with a healthy lifestyle. It is important that parents and guardians monitor and guide their children to live healthy lives. If this is not properly addressed, children suffer from serious health problems due to obesity. As they say, prevention is always better than cure. So a healthy child will have a better life than an unhealthy one.
